Attention: Incorrect SBI Code May Lead to Unjustified Pension Obligations

Publication Date: August 22, 2025

In September, the Dutch Chamber of Commerce (KvK) will update the SBI codes of millions of companies. This adjustment is necessary due to the emergence and disappearance of business activities. An incorrect code can affect subsidy and loan applications, insurance premiums, and pension obligations. This update specifically addresses issues related to sectoral pension funds.

The SBI code is more than just an administrative label: sectoral pension funds use these codes to determine which employers may fall under their mandatory participation. An incorrect code can result in a company being wrongly contacted by a pension fund. This may lead to prolonged discussions, legal proceedings, and in the worst case, high pension costs.

KWPS advises checking the new SBI code as soon as it becomes available, which will be between September 5 and 7. If the new code does not match your actual business activities, it is important to correct it with the Chamber of Commerce as soon as possible.
